Origin stories of the Tarot

The origin of the Tarot is shrouded in legends and there is no reliable source that indicates the exact date of the deck's appearance. According to the theory of the writer Gertrude Mauchly, the Tarot was later considered a symbolic message from the poet Petrarch to his beloved Laura, however, this theory was not confirmed.

The scholar Antoine Court de Gébelin attributed the Tarot to Egyptian origins, based on the legend of an Egyptian temple that had 22 rooms, the doors of which had designs similar to the symbols of the cards. But this hypothesis also turned out to be false.

Alphonse-Louis Constant, a French occultist, was the first to compare the 22 trump cards of the Tarot with Hebrew letters, which, according to the Hermetic tradition, were associated with astrological, alchemical and other mystical symbols.
