IN Trinity-St. George Convent (Sochi) we went on our own, although we were offered an excursion trip there (like many other church “institutions” there are excursions there almost every day).

Honestly, Trinity-St. George Convent was not the purpose of our car journey that day. We went to see other sights - and the Trout Farm. But on the way we came across a sign to the monastery, and we decided to look at it for company.

We parked the car on the site in front of the monastery. It turned out that at the same time there was an excursion here, so we joined it to listen to the history of the creation of the monastery.

Trinity-St. George Diocesan Convent for Women is an Orthodox missionary convent in the village of Lesnoy, Adler District, Sochi, Krasnodar Territory, Russia. Opened August 10 1999 . Is the successor to the name and traditions abolished by Soviet powerHoly Trinity Monastery.

Here are my photos:

But there was no holy water:

There are 4 churches on the territory of the monastery:

  • Temple in the name of the Holy Great Martyr Huar.
  • Temple of the Icon of the Mother of God “Quiet my sorrows” with a carved linden iconostasis;
  • Cathedral of the Icon of the Vladimir Mother of God.
  • Temple in honor of the Seven Arrows Icon of the Mother of God.

....

Well, what else can be said about the Trinity-St. George Convent (Sochi) before I tell you how to get to it?

It is, of course, very beautiful here. The territory, although small, is well-groomed. Temples generally look magnificent in the sun, sparkling with golden domes. I don’t know about you, but I immediately remembered a piece of text from “The Tale of Bygone Years” about how they chose a religion for the then pagan Rus':

But we'll come back to the Trinity-St. George Convent (Sochi, Adler): how to get there

The monastery is located in the village of Lesnoy (Adler-Sochi)

I already said at the beginning that you can get to the monastery on a guided tour.

Another option is your own car. This is where the map comes in handy:

Moving from Adler (Sochi) along the highway to Krasnaya Polyana, you need to turn towards Galitsyno, and along this road get to the village of Lesnoye, where the monastery is located.

Churches in Rus' from the moment of its baptism, almost everywhere where possible, were built with stone (so that the enemy would not destroy it, and the fire would not destroy it). Of course, where the forest grows around and there is no stone, wooden churches were erected, which, for the most part, stood for 200-400 years and were destroyed by Mother Nature. Well, if you are not going to build a church, then when choosing a material for structures, along with stone, brick and wood, think about metal. Light metal structures - one of the best options for hangars, warehouses, garages, utility blocks and pavilions that need to be built quickly and with a minimum of labor and financial costs. If necessary, non-flammable insulation (so as not to reduce) and beautiful interior decoration should be “added” to metal structures. But even then, the construction of your building will only take a few weeks, not months or years.

On the banks of the stormy Shakhe River, flowing from the glaciers of the Greater Caucasus, a beautiful monastic monastery grew up - the Trinity-St. George Convent. Pilgrims from all over Russia flock here, preferring relaxation among green mountains, ancient ruins and Orthodox shrines to the noisy, stripped coastline.

Recently, the flow of tourists from Sochi and Adler has increased: even people far from Orthodoxy sometimes want to think about the eternal, watching the flow of cool rivers while the monastery bells ring.

Story

Christianity in the Sochi mountains has an ancient history. Some mentions of him are older than the time of the baptism of Rus'. The beginning of Christian preaching in the Caucasus was laid by the disciples of Christ. Later it intensified under the influence of the Greeks and Romans, who used the Black Sea coast as a place of exile for the “undesirables,” among whom were many Christians.

However, in the late Middle Ages, the tradition ended with the invasion of the Turks. Temples were reduced to ruins and defensive structures. For many centuries, until the conquest of the Caucasian coast by Russia, the former faith was not heard of. At the end of the 19th century, churches and monasteries began to be built again, including the St. George Monastery near the village. Lesnoye.

The brethren did not have to live long in this fertile land. After the Civil War, the monastery was completely destroyed and the monks were expelled. Many of them secretly settled in the gorges, not far from the holy place. In memory of the former monastery, the name of the stop on Krasnopolyanskoye Highway remains - “Monastery”.

The modern, now women's monastery, was built anew in 1999 on the site of an abandoned recreation center. All of Russia took part in its revival. Elegant architecture, unusual iconostases and comfort brought a piece of warmth and holiness of Central Rus' to the Caucasus Mountains.

Shrines and attractions of the monastery

The main temple of the monastery is the Church of the Martyr Huar, a Roman soldier who suffered for Christ. Before the revolution, practically no temples were built in his name, but now there are only three of them, including this sky-blue building, bright in any weather. Saint Uar became beloved by the people in the current time of unbelief: traditionally they prayed to him for those who died without repentance, unbaptized and suicides. The temple was built at the expense of the mother of the deceased border guard;

The Chapel of the Mother of God “Quiet My Sorrows,” an elegant building with an onion burning in the sun, contains an unusual carved iconostasis and an icon of the Mother of God made from Ural gems;

The Church of the Mother of God “Semistrelnaya” is decorated with an interesting faience iconostasis, a gift from the Urals. Weddings take place here. You can turn to the Mother of God of the Seven Arrows with a request for the reconciliation of the warring parties, the cessation of family quarrels and troubles;

Temple of the Mother of God "Semistrelnaya"

A well with hydrogen sulfide water, identical in composition to “Matsestin”, is covered with a “canopy” - an elegant canopy, which is also a belfry;

The Church of the Vladimir Mother of God, one of the first buildings of the monastery, is directed into the sky. Here baptisms are performed and great shrines are kept - particles of the relics of St. Nicholas, the Venerable Fathers of the Kiev Pechersk, a piece of the Belt of the Virgin Mary, which relieves infertility.

An archaeological site of the Middle Ages, the ruins of a Christian temple with a necropolis, can be viewed near the Krion Nero spring, half a kilometer from the northern outskirts of the village.

A similar monument is located in a mountainous and wooded area, not far from the famous Vorontsov Caves. There is a path from the monastery to the ancient shrine (approx. 5 km). On the day of remembrance of St. Panteleimon, religious processions with prayers are held. In ancient times, a major trade route passed here, leaving the ruins of temples and fortresses, some of which were completely destroyed.

On the way, turning off the Krasnopolyanskoe highway into the village. In Akhshtyr you can see a well-preserved stone temple, built in the early Middle Ages and renovated after the Caucasian War. Another ancient ruins are located on the town of Sugarloaf, 4 km from Akhshtyr to the west, with a fair amount of elevation gain. There is an old Greek cemetery nearby. The ruins are covered with film to protect them from precipitation. Unfortunately, there are not enough funds for archaeological work and restoration of all Sochi monuments.

How to get there

During the season, excursion buses constantly run to the monastery from Sochi, and pilgrimage trips are made.
It’s also easy to get there by public transport: from the airport in Adler, take minibus 131 to Galitsyno, get off at the final stop and walk about 5 km following the signs to the monastery gates.

On bus 105, leaving every hour from Sochi, ask the driver to stop on the road to the monastery. Walk with prayer for about 6 km.

By car, turn off the Black Sea highway and drive along the Krasnopolyanskoe highway, admiring the beautiful views of the snow-capped peaks. After the village of Kazachiy Brod, do not miss the turn to Golitsyno and further to the village. Lesnoye. The road is paved everywhere.

Not far from the village of Golitsyno in Sochi is the Trinity-St. George Convent. This quiet place, far from the bustle and noise of the world, was chosen by three nuns to build a monastery in 1999.

Having chosen a place at an abandoned recreation center, the nuns requested permission from local authorities and, having received approval, founded a nunnery. The construction of churches at the Trinity-George Convent was carried out with donations from parishioners.

Now on the territory of the monastery there are four temples: a church in honor of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, a temple in the name of the martyr Uar of Egypt, a church-chapel in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Quench My Sorrows", a temple in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Softening Evil Hearts" (" Seven-shot"). Seven nuns live and serve in the monastery.

The main temple in which services are held daily at the Trinity-St. George Convent is the Uara temple. It was built in 2003 with donations from one unfortunate woman whose son died tragically.

Saint Huar lived in the 4th century AD in Egypt. During his lifetime he was a Roman military leader and a secret adherent of the Christian faith. For his beliefs, Uar was martyred and his body thrown out to be devoured by wild animals.

But one pious widow Cleopatra, knowing Uar as a decent and honest person, did not allow his body to be violated and buried it near her home.

When the opportunity arose to transport the body to Palestine, she did so and buried it in the family crypt with her unbaptized relatives. A few days after this, Cleopatra had a dream in which Uar appeared to her. In a dream, he told the woman that in gratitude for her kind soul, he prayed to God for her unbaptized relatives and now their souls are under the domination and supervision of the Lord God.

Another temple on the territory of the monastery is the Church of the Virgin Mary of the Seven Shores. It was built in 2008. Weddings take place here. Its pillar-shaped architecture in the spirit of neo-Russian style buildings with a hipped roof makes this temple stand out from the rest.

The temples of the monastery contain particles of the holy relics of Nicholas the Wonderworker, Panteleimon the Healer and the saints of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.

On the territory of the Trinity-St. George Monastery, you can not only touch the holy icons and pray for yourself and your loved ones, but also try the delicious monastery baked goods, which are sold here.

You can visit the Trinity-George Convent within the framework of

“What else can you see in Sochi?” - friends and sometimes strangers ask me. Among the attractions of the city of Sochi there is a place that you want to visit again and again. This is the Trinity-St. George Convent. Located in a picturesque corner in the mountains, it produces a surprisingly peaceful impression: an amazing place where the beauty of nature is in tune with the beauty of man-made things.

Construction of the Trinity-St. George Monastery began in 1999, mainly with donations from parishioners. The first year of construction turned out to be very difficult: there were not enough workers, building materials, and food. And at this time in a temporary temple the icons were filled with myrrh and streamed myrrh for three whole months! Hundreds of believers flocked to the temple. They carried whatever they could. This is how the first patrons of the arts appeared at the monastery. The providence of God saved the monastery.

Currently, there are eight churches on the territory of the monastery.

Temple in honor of the icons of the Mother of God of Peschanskaya and
Vladimirskaya

The very first temple was erected on the territory of the monastery in honor of the Icon of the Mother of God of Vladimir (2000). An extension over this temple - a temple in honor of the Icon of the Mother of God of Peschanskaya - was built later.

In the Church of the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God there is a shrine with particles of the relics of eighty-three saints of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, particles of the holy relics of Nicholas the Wonderworker, Matrona of Moscow, Diveyevo saints, Peter and Fevronia of Murom, Luke Voino-Yasenetsky.

The iconostasis of the church is made of wood and has carved patterns:

Lamps in the shape of a ship look very nice:

The press likes to mention that on Christmas night in 2013 V.V. prayed here. Putin. By the way, there is nothing surprising in this. The President of Russia has already celebrated Christmas in the Transfiguration Cathedral of St. Petersburg, in the Church of the Intercession of the Virgin in the village of Turginovo, in the Alexander Antoninovsky Church in Selishche, in the Sretenskaya Church in Petrozavodsk and even in one of the churches in Yakutsk. At the same time, he does not like to bring issues of faith “for public discussion.”

Temples in honor of the martyr Huar appeared in Russia quite recently. The Holy Martyr Uar has the special grace to intercede before the Lord for the souls of those who have departed without repentance. Before the revolution in Rus', the traditions of Orthodoxy were sacredly revered. Later, already in the Soviet Union, millions of people were excommunicated from the church. Until now, many of them live and die without receiving Baptism. In churches in honor of the martyr Huar, they pray, asking for relief from the fate of souls who died in unbelief and did not accept Holy Baptism. And also about the health of infants and young children.

The temple to the holy martyr Huar, on the territory of the Trinity-St. George Convent, was erected at the expense of a mother who lost her son.

The Seven-Arrow Icon of the Mother of God is considered one of the most miraculous icons in Rus'. The iconography of the icon is similar to the icon of the Mother of God Softening Evil Hearts. The icon depicts the Most Holy Theotokos, pierced by seven arrows of “sadness and heart disease.”

In front of the icon they ask for the intercession of the Mother of God against hardness of heart and resolution of conflicts between loved ones. The Most Holy Theotokos is revered as the guardian of the hearth.

The iconostasis of the temple is made of faience, in the Urals, and makes a very joyful impression. No wonder people love to get married here.

The temple in honor of the icon of the Mother of God Soothes My Sorrows was built in 2005. The author of this project, like all the churches on the territory of the Trinity-St. George Convent, is our fellow countryman, architect Fyodor Ivanovich Afuksenidi.

Prayer in front of the icon “Quiet My Sorrows” helps to heal from despair, mental and physical sorrows.

There is a holy spring next to the temple. The canopy above the well also serves as a belfry. This corner is complemented by the mosaic painting “Jesus Christ’s Conversation with the Samaritan Woman.”

Water lilies bloom in a small pond.

The Icon of the Mother of God Abbess of St. Mount Athos is a new icon in content and origin. Written at the beginning of the twentieth century.

House church in honor of the Burning Bush Icon of the Mother of God

In the House Church in honor of the icon of the Mother of God the Burning Bush, the monastery's servants pray. The temple was built at the expense of one of the trustees of the monastery. The highlight of this temple was the iconostasis made of pressed Himalayan salt. When the backlight is turned on, the iconostasis glows pink, and the Himalayan salt disinfects the air.

A hotel is being built nearby for pilgrims traveling through southern Russia. The construction is carried out so carefully that it will in no way disturb your elevated mood.

Another construction project on the territory of the temple is the construction of the Church of St. Panteleimon the Healer.

How to get to Trinity-Georgievsky on your own
convent?

From any district of Sochi you can get to the airport. There, change to bus No. 131 and get off at the final stop “Selo Golitsino”. Leaving the store and school on the left, follow the road until the sign. Then everything is clear, but not very quickly: the journey takes 20-30 minutes. If you ask, they will definitely give you a ride: mutual assistance is welcome here.

On the territory of the monastery you can immediately relax in the shade, drink herbal tea with monastery pastries.

Very friendly employees will answer all your questions. If you're lucky, you can join the excursion.

I hope that I answered the question of what you can see in Sochi on your own.

In the picturesque village of Lesnoye, almost nearby are the Church of St. George the Victorious and the Trinity-George Convent in Sochi, which harmoniously combine the beauty of nature and beauty created by human hands. This amazing place is located very close to the Black Sea: just 20 kilometers from Adler towards Krasnaya Polyana.

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the village was founded by Orthodox Greek settlers. And in 1898, exclusively at their expense, construction of a church began here in honor of the patron saint of these places: St. George the Victorious. It is not an easy task to build a church, even a small one, only with the funds of ordinary people, so the construction lasted for 17 long years.

Events of the distant past

A small church in a small village had to go through difficult times, filled with tragic events, especially at the beginning of its existence.

Indeed, in the 1920s, during the repressions against the Greeks, many families living here were destroyed, and the village was almost completely deserted. In memory of those who died during these terrible events, a memorial plaque is now installed next to the church.

And on this pedestal the years of construction of the temple are indicated: 1892-1913. And it is written that the tree that grows nearby served as a belfry. Bells hung on it, calling people to worship.

In 1937, during persecutions and repressions, the temple was again destroyed. All religious shrines, by order of the authorities, were taken to the river bank and set on fire. Officially, from that time on, the Church of St. George the Victorious ceased to exist.

But, in reality, this was not the case. Believers secretly came to the temple and prayed, believing and hoping for the help of St. George and other heavenly Intercessors.

During the Second World War, the temple building itself was severely destroyed. Then the bells were removed from it and sent for melting down. And only in 1990, again, with donations and money from old-timers of the village, a new belfry was installed.

In the 70s, a decision was made in the bureaucratic offices to completely demolish the temple from the face of the earth. Even the method was thought out: using a tractor. But local residents did not allow this to happen. The entire village came out to defend the historical value. And now, the saved shrine is a cultural and historical monument of Sochi.

Internal and external charm of the church

The church is small, but the whole thing is somehow light and graceful. It consists of two tiers, the top one is wooden. Together with the bell tower, located slightly to the side, they look like toy houses from a children's fairy tale. Beautiful in both shape and decoration, surrounded by green plants - it is simply amazing!

The interior of the church is also magnificent! The original paintings are still preserved here. The carved iconostasis is made of chestnut. It was moved here from the Holy Trinity Monastery, which was located nearby before the revolution, and was completely abolished during the years of Soviet power.

Everywhere in the temple there are beautiful icons: old ones alternate with more modern ones. Here is the Image of Sergius of Radonezh, and Nicholas the Wonderworker, and the icon of Saint Harlampius, who lived to be 113 years old.

There are also icons of 3 healers. This is Saint Panteleimon, Saint Luke, who lived during Stalin’s time, Nektarius - a Greek saint who, among other things, helps cancer patients.

There is still a “Monastery” bus stop nearby, named after the Trinity Monastery that was once located here. But the memory of the monastery itself exists only in the stories of local residents.

Some visiting rules

It’s a shame, but photography is not allowed here, so there will be very few photos of all this splendor. But maybe this is for the better: after all, seeing everything with your own eyes is much more interesting.

Next to the temple there is a beautiful gazebo, surrounded by flowers, for relaxing and drinking tea.

And there is also a large room with tables and benches for receiving pilgrims and other important visitors.

We were told that different groups of both tourists and clergy often come here. And the temple workers, with great pleasure and love, treat them to various dishes and delicious herbal tea.

On weekdays the temple is open from 12 to 17 hours. On Saturday from 10 to 17. And on Sunday from 7.30 to 17 hours.

We were not allowed to climb the bell tower. One of the local attendants said thoughtfully: “She is so tall. You never know!” But she gave me a small icon of the Mother of God. We didn't argue.

From here you can see a beautiful view of the St. George Monastery. True, its full panorama is slightly obscured by trees.

Having thanked the church servant, who with great love told us for half an hour about the historical past of the church and this place, about the numerous miracles that occurred through prayers to St. George the Victorious, we set off further to the monastery of the Venerable Great Martyr.

St. George's Monastery

Amazing monastery temples

The Trinity-St. George Convent in the village of Lesnoye, not far from the center of Sochi, Adler region, opened its doors to parishioners in August 1999.

Previously, there was a camp site for a concrete plant. But soon after its appearance, it was abandoned and the place was empty.

Thanks to Mother Superior Anastasia, her perseverance and patience, several churches were built on the territory during this time. This is simply amazing! Each of them is a work of art. The buildings are colorfully painted and look like fairy-tale towers. And that’s not all - the temples are different from each other, each has its own unique feature.

The very first church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God appeared on the territory of the monastery of St. George. It is located on the first floor of this beautiful building.

Now it has a font for the Baptism ceremony. On the second floor of the building some of the main shrines of the monastery are stored: the relics of saints, icons of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and others, as well as a thread from the Belt of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The temple in honor of the icon of the “Peschanskaya Mother of God” (located on the second floor) is beautiful and graceful. A significant event took place within its walls during the night service on Christmas Day 2013. On this festive night, President V. Putin prayed to the Lord here together with the parishioners and nuns of the monastery.

You can climb the stairs to the open terrace.

From here a completely different view of the St. George Convent opens up! Very nearby are the colorful domes of temples,

and the elegant churches look like toys.

In the church in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “Seven Shots” (“Softening Evil Hearts”), an unusual porcelain iconostasis was installed. A beautiful wedding ceremony is held here. And the temple itself looks very unusual and fabulous.

It looks very small from the outside. But the golden domes and stars shining in the sun give it a very solemn appearance.

It’s a pity that it was closed during our visit: it would have been very interesting to look at it from the inside and feel its “unusualness.”

But you could admire its external design as much as you wanted. I really liked the forged railings at the entrance porch of the temple. They looked so unusual!

The sky-blue temple of the Holy Great Martyr Huar is noteworthy. This saint was a Roman soldier and did not hide his views, which did not coincide with the opinions of others. It was for his Christian faith that he accepted martyrdom.

Now the main monastic services are held in this church.

Throughout Russia there are only three churches consecrated in honor of the Great Martyr. Uara: in the capital - in Moscow, in Ivanovo and this one, in Sochi, in which, unlike others, you can pray for people who died unbaptized, for those who departed from the faith, as well as for suicides.

This Sochi temple was built with the money of an inconsolable mother who lost her son during his service on the border.

In the chapel “Assuage My Sorrows”, the iconostasis made of linden and the beautiful stained glass windows on the windows attract everyone’s attention. And in the house church in honor of the Burning Bush icon, the iconostasis is made of pressed Himalayan salt. Beautiful!

Nearby there is a snow-white gazebo surrounded by greenery and flowers.

There is a stone well here, symbolizing the gospel story where Jesus Christ talked with the Samaritan woman.

This story is also reflected in the mosaic picture located here. Nearby there is a small bell tower.

A symbolic jug is attached to the well, and some rainwater has accumulated at the bottom, and tourists throw coins here.

There is an outdoor swimming pool (or plunge pool) nearby. It is probably assumed that the rite of Baptism with complete immersion of a person will be carried out here.

The idea is wonderful, but there is no water here yet.

Life of the monastery

If there is such a desire, then you can agree and live in the St. George’s Monastery for some time, fulfilling obediences, helping the monastery to the best of your ability.

Residential buildings for the sisters of the monastery and visiting pilgrims are almost completed.

There is a farm here: roosters walk important, hens scurry about.

In the enclosures, colorful pheasants fly from branch to branch.

It has its own bakery. By the way, the pastries are very tasty. You can buy pies and gingerbreads. Try it if you have the opportunity, you won’t regret it!

The territory of the monastery is very beautiful. Not only is it surrounded by a wonderful forest, but the sisters of the monastery decorate it with different trees and flowers.

So the air around is filled with a fabulous aroma.

And the temples in such an environment look even more magical.

Giant mushrooms were also discovered under the trees. Apparently, they live very well here in such a heavenly atmosphere! 😆

Services in the St. George Monastery are held every day. The schedule of services here is general. The Liturgy is held at 9 a.m., and the evening service begins at 5 p.m.

I would also like to say that the monastery is developing, construction of a new church has begun. According to one of the workers of the monastery, it will be consecrated in honor of Panteleimon the Healer.

Come to see! And, perhaps, you can somehow help the young forest monastery.

Forest splendor

The village of Lesnoye is surrounded by high mountains, on the banks of the Psakho river - if you translate this name, it means “running to the sea.” Beautiful name, isn't it? Locals even swim here. For them, apparently, this is a common thing. But... brr, the water is probably icy.

And you can’t really swim in strong currents and shallow depths.

The nature here is simply amazing - forest, air, flowers, very quiet and calm. Pets roam the streets calmly and importantly. And you clearly understand who is visiting whom here. 😀

Indeed, some kind of peace arises in the soul! You can find a place and sit in the forest shade, but someone, on the contrary, may want to be silent, basking in the sun, surrounded by flowers and bright green trees.

Today there are a little more than 20 houses in the village of Lesnoye. Every year on May 6th a significant holiday is celebrated here. It's St. George's Day. On this day many guests gather here.

After the festive service, folk festivities take place: tables are set, music is played, and folk dances are performed. The holiday is very fun and interesting!

Come! Guests are always welcome here.

How to get to Lesnoye

You can come to the Trinity-St. George Convent from Adler or Sochi as part of an organized group. The tour bus will take you directly to the monastery gates. True, such excursions are held quite rarely.

Or you can get to the Sochi convent on your own, it’s very simple. By car you move from Sochi or Adler towards Krasnaya Polyana. Follow the sign and turn towards Golitsyno, and there the road will lead to the village of Lesnoye.

Another way to get to the Church and Monastery of St. George the Victorious is by car. Before reaching, turn following the sign to. This road will also lead you to your intended goal.

If you want to get to the temple, you will need to turn left at the fork. And those who want to see the convent in Golitsyno (Sochi) go to the right.

Near the monastery, as well as near the temple, there are free parking lots where you can leave your car without any problems. There are not many people here yet.

Coordinates of St. George's Church: 43.57287, 39.97452.

Coordinates of the Monastery of St. George the Victorious: 43.57546, 39.97476.

You can see the location of these Orthodox objects on the map (click “+” to zoom in on objects or “-” to zoom out).

To get the most out of the city and its surroundings, I recommend booking an apartment, room or hotel for one or more nights. Daily housing can easily be rented in Sochi or Adler using the service
